We have recently come across this white paper about the promises for People With Disabilities through Internet of Things. Among other things a particularly interesting model has been put forth that discussed the scope of IoT to make the environments accessible.
Traditionally the solutions for accessible pathways for people with visual disability. have been tactile paths and route maps in Braille and announcements and lastly visual assistance by another person or trained animal.
In this article, the usage of RFID as part of IoT has been suggested where an embedded RFID can help people navigate easily with minimal need for assistance. This could be a major break through in independent living and travelling. All that would be neccessary now would be properly tagged building which can hence make sure any person using IoT can traverse through with ease.
The scope of such a technology can also be explored in the case of elderly citizens affected by Alzheimer’s. A very interesting prospect indeed.
